Managing Masking

Another exciting ‘toolbox’ technique

Art in the Bay student – Leslie Mackie – using masking in the beginning stages of her painting.

One of the most exciting tools to add to your ‘toolbox of techniques’ is masking! Masking involves using materials like masking tape, paper, or liquid masking fluid to protect specific areas of your painting while you work on others. It’s a fantastic way to create crisp lines and define negative space with intention.

By controlling where the paint goes, you can easily separate colours and prevent unwanted paint from bleeding into areas you want to keep clean. This technique is perfect for creating complex and detailed compositions without the worry of making a mess. Masking offers a playful and precise way to build up your artwork, giving you the freedom to be bold with your brushstrokes while keeping your design clean and intentional.
