MCGREGOR PLEIN AIR ART RETREAT – March 2026

We had an amazing getaway to McGregor in the Little Karoo to do some Plein Air painting. We stayed at The Barn and Tswalu in McGregor, which were wonderful. It was an incredible weekend of painting, eating and enjoying each others’ companies and stories.

Our “LEARNING TO PAINTING LOOSELY” workshop had a bird theme. Each artist was given a picture of a bird to paint. The workshop centered around how to begin a painting loosely by blocking in the dark areas and then adding medium and light areas to achieve a strong foundation for the details that are added later.

It was wonderful to visit Christine Crawley’s (an abstract artist) studio in Muizenberg as part of our ABSRACT WORKSHOP. After Christine had explained her process, we returned to the Art In The Bay studio in Fish Hoek to create our own wonderful abstract pieces. We combined a range of techniques, such as collage, stamping and stenciling to integrate the colours on the canvas. This was a hugely creative and fun process.

SELF PORTRAIT SIP AND PAINT was a huge success. Artists painted expressionistic self portraits. A full range of wine and snacks was available at this event. This was a sold out event.

Our workshop on “PAINT BRUSH TECHNIQUES” was very successful. Artists learnt how to use and choose the correct brushes for the different techniques taught. Artist experimented with a range of brushes and brushstrokes.

Our workshop on “BIG SKY SCUMBLING” was sold out and everyone had great fun. Students learnt how to paint clouds with a technique called scumbling (read my blog on scumbling techniques on this site)
