RESIST/REPEL/REBUFF

DON’T FORGET TO DIVE INTO THE TOOLBOX

“The family of resist paint techniques is a fantastic way to expand your artistic creativity.

Essentially, resist techniques involve defining areas that “resisted” the subsequent application of colour.

Think of the resist coat as anything paint will not adhere to. That might wax candles or crayons, masking fluid or any substance that repels the water in water based acrylics. Its multimedia too. Crayola wax crayons dramatically offer both colour and the resist surface.

The normal rules of creativity still apply. Bold use of a heavy bodied acrylic will produce dramatic effects while the use of watery applications of colours will appear as a gentle wash.

The idea is to mark the canvas with a substance known as a resist and then to apply the acrylic paint over it. One can then scratch back into the paint layer and reveal the underlying substance or one can paint a wash over the resist and watch as the watery layer is repelled by the resist substance. Some blotting may be necessary to lift excess water from the canvas.

And the creativity does not stop there. Once the surfaces have fully dried, the “resist” can be cleaned in different ways, each way contributing significantly to the final impression.
